The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he began designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose impact on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
