From Solo Parent Holiday Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Heaven: One Mother's Journey

Following my marriage concluded, I thought vacations being a solo mother could be straightforward. Quickly discovered they proved either outrageously expensive, or appeared exclusively suitable for “conventional” households, or were far too cheap that I returned home more exhausted than when I’d left.

Initial Vacation Attempts

My first attempt, tenting with friends, went well up until I had to pack up the tent. Hours of struggling with it in the heat later, I developed a dislike for camping. Subsequently, an adventurous trip for single-parent families. The abseiling and exploring caves were fantastic, but resting in a bunk bed wrecked my spine. We tried a low-cost all-inclusive in Tenerife, but the hordes of traditional families felt intense, and pool-side chats with fellow ladies died down because I didn’t come with a handy husband for their spouses to talk to. A trip to Majorca with a friend and her kids was wonderful, but the cost was eye-watering.

Discovering Pet-Sitting

Then, the previous fall, a friend inquired if we’d house-sit her pets within the county while she attended to a wedding. During a tranquil couple of days, we strolled on the beach, and settled near the fireplace in the evening. That led to house-sitting for her friend in the region, and it also went smoothly. Encouraged, I paid an annual £99 membership to register on a pet-sitting platform, where, by looking after people’s animals, you reside in their homes without cost. In just a couple of days, I’d arranged a ten-day house-sit in Sussex, looking after a labrador called Buzz while his owners were abroad.

Each day's walks provided the opportunity to discover stunning natural settings.

This marked the initial sit for unknown individuals, but any nerves vanished the moment we arrived the gorgeous spacious home and met the calm Buzz, who thrived for tummy rubs. Each day's canine strolls gave us the possibility to venture into magnificent scenic areas, and, once we came back, we were able to unwind outdoors for important discussions about our preferred “Ghosts” characters in the BBC sitcom. We avoided any pricey tourist traps to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, indulged to nail care, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced more carefree and happier than I had for a long time, and could feel the connection with my daughter Polly deepen every day. I don’t afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Life seemed achievable again.

Could House-Sitting Right for You?

Pet-sitting isn’t for everyone. Some people prefer zero duties during vacations other than selecting their upcoming cocktail, aren’t into pets, or perhaps feel odd regarding staying in a someone else’s bed, emptying the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. But the soothing rhythm of ordinary living, with employment removed and fresh locations to explore, suits me perfectly.

This prevents me from descending into complete inactivity, which leaves me experience twitchy and strangely hollow. Moreover, financially, pet-sitting acts as a lifeline for a single parent. Ten days getaway in a comparable house within the identical region we stayed could cost me back approximately £2,500 via rental platforms.

A New Perspective

Regarding residing in a another person’s home, I discovered it nourishing. Even though house-sitting represents a exchange, it’s also an act of faith between unfamiliar people and animals, which has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, caring and balanced side, full of appreciation for the individuals and places we encounter. I’ve already scheduled an additional four days off, looking after a sighthound within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I hope to attempt pet-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of innovative planning, we are able to see the world from the coziness of a home – it just turns out to be another person’s.
