This production, though, could coincide too neatly with the mythologized version circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a endorsement rather than a challenge.

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its pop-culture machine have collaborated to craft a tailor-made version of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

One recent example is a TV series released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Western portrayals often end up reinforcing this same narrative rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a bestselling satirical novel sets out to subvert the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

In the film, the president is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to stabilise the country because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the state in practice.

Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities are likely to seize the opportunity to frame his casting as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is frequently an omnipotent figure who never appears on screen. He is signaled through photographs or orders from on high. Now, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it perhaps aims to question.
