The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and criminals kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional song composed by artist Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and fun. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an installment of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
