It might not have been at the same level as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the mayor of Miami-Dade conducted a ceremonial pardon event this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven. Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood. “This animal is guiltless. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office. “Unless you count eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.” The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House. The pig, provided by a first responder, was given its name from the current slang trend of young people yelling “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so pervasive that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection. A Future Secured Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement. “The pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to open the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message. “It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Every time, we are proud to celebrate tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.” Guests enjoyed a vegetarian menu of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
