The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side

The forward, with six months left on her contract, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant uplift to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Steam at Carrington

Securing the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since arriving in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s new deal, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
